Hard to find Comanches anymore, or at least I rarely see them sold online. This one has an undesirable engine (2 .8L V6) , but there are ways to make it less awful, reportedly.
(Yes, I should give up CL for the foreseeable future but not gonna happen.)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Looks pretty clean, all things considered.
Advice from JeepForum.com:
To start, I have some experience with the 2.8L V6. In my opinion, these engines are best suited for boat anchors.
However, if you must run one, as I do, I highly recommend the following:
- Install a K&N air filter element. It will cost over $50, but it’s well worth it. Your 2.8L V6 needs all the air it can get and a standard paper element just doesn’t cut it.
- Remove the factory coil and throw it away. It’s absolute junk. Replace it with an “MSD Blaster” coil. It looks just like the original and mounts in the same place. All factory wires readily connect. The MSD coil is of a much higher quality. It doesn’t “arc and sparc” like the factory coil and it provides better spark, which the 2.8L V6 really needs.
After completing the above two steps, my 2.8L V6 is a whole new beast. It’s no street terror, but at least it will pull the truck up a hill without being passed by mopeds. The fuel mileage is also better.

Found this 4Runner on Craigslist this morning for $4,800. 3.0 V6 (the bigger motor), 4x4, stick shift, and the back window works (yesss!) “Posted 12 hours ago.”
Went about my day, and by mid-afternoon was thinking “I really need to seriously look at that 4Runner.” Luckily I’d kept the browser tab open.
“This posting has been deleted by its author.”
So disappointed. Sold in less than a day :(

At US$4000, I rate that as a Crack Pipe.
Not a good deal at all to me.

Sounds about right, although two cool Jeeps I’ve been interested in recently lingered online much longer than I expected. Virus i s screwing up everything.

Yeah, I think with a manual and a decent engine it’d be worth that. It does have 4wd, which is surprisingly uncommon on Cherokees and Comanches.

Comanches are awesome and I somehow manage to spot one a month, though I would never own one without the 4.0
Also your posts really depress me. Pretty much everything you post is available here in WA with 90% less rust. If you get really desperate, you might consider asking an Oppo in a friendlier climate to do some recon for you.

Bigger and WORSE motor. Though people don't seem to care about that anymore because 1st gens are becoming collectable.

Or if it was completely rust free, which it isn’t, might make it less of a CP.
For it to be worth $4k, it needs to be rust free and have the 4L I6.

I’m not very knowledgeable with Joops, but if you need someone to crawl underneath and check for rot, I have that ability. Problem is that by the time I call anyone, anything good is already sold. Buying a good car out here is TOUGH, and highly competitive. Add 4WD? Fugh etaboutit.

Oh , is there an advantage to the 2.4? I’m not an expert on these.

It is shocking how rare they are, much less in 4wd and if you want a manual? Forget about it.
Also, just saw this. $4,000 isn’t a bad shout considering and it may either help alleviate or exacerbate the Willys pain from earlier. It’s more attainable but also on the other side of the country.

The short answer is the 2.4 is comparatively much more reliable and not much of a sacrifice in power. The 3VZ 3.0 V6 is notorious for head gasket problems, anecdotally categorized as “not if but when.” However, Jordan (that fella with the yellow C5 Z06) is as far as I know the longest active owner of a 3.0 4Runner. I would definitely pick his brain if you were legitimately interested. There is another 3.0 owner here who has been inactive for nearly a year.

That $ 1500 Cherokee is tempting. Have a mechanic pick it up, fix it, and by the time September rolls around somehow transport myself to the area and drive it home.

Wait the 2wd Jeep is the one that caught your eye? The two doors are surprisingly rare, which gives them an inherent cool factor.
I’m surprised you weren’t smitten by the Willy s. It seems mostly complete and is so much cheaper than that (admittedly beautiful) red one you saw

Good thing for your wallet plane tickets aren't viable right now. Soon they might be viable and cheap, so maybe be careful.

I’ll get in touch for sure if I find another 4Runner on sale. Thank you for the details on this; getting another rad-era Toyota has been on my mind for a while.
